Hush now hush now hush. Rush now rush now rush. Run faster than before. Push push push push push. Push push push push push. Push that fear right out the door, my dear. Kick kick kick kick kick. Kick kick kick kick kick. Kick that monkey drug off your back and sing. Whine whine whine whine whine. Don’t whine whine whine whine whine. As hard as it is today, in a year you won’t feel the same way. So scream scream scream scream scream. Dream scream scream scream scream. Yell at the world, say: I’m not through with you! So cry cry cry cry cry. Won’t you cry cry cry cry cry. Put your tears in a glass that’s rimmed with salt so I can go. Take take take take take. Take take take take take. Won’t you take what you need from me you will see it’s great. And celebrate celebrate brate. Celebrate celebrate brate. Pop the balloons in the middle of June, you’re the best. As you can see this can go on for days. I could celebrate fifteen other ways. But I really want you to feel comfortable and true. So I won’t lie lie lie lie lie. I won’t lie lie lie lie lie. I saw you walking around, all over town and I’m trying to bring you back. So come back back back right now. You come back back back right now. Don’t close your eyes forever. We’ll never get together then. Don’t die die die die die. Don’t die die die die die. My heart is so fragile I don’t think that I could handle that now. Oh my heart is so fragile I don’t think that I could handle that now. So hope hope hope hope hope. Let’s hope hope hope hope hope. That this rope is long enough I could pull you over stuff so you’re fine. Let’s find another place. Where we can have this race. I’ll race you around the rosy, everything’ll be cozy, you’ll see. And draw draw draw draw draw. Draw draw draw draw draw. Draw your guns at noon and whisper a happy tune to the dead man. So draw your guns at noon and we’ll whisper a happy tune to the dead man.

I know the sun is shining. I know the sun is shining. This sun is a shining and I know that I’m all right. I know you’re sun is shining (I know that I’m all right). I know that the sky is blue and I know that you once were true. I know the sky is blue and I know my fingers don’t do what they do. You know that this could be the one and you know that this could be the one. I know that you want to hate me I don’t want to lie to you (I don’t want to lie). Buildings coming forth right now. Buildings are going to shadow us (you)out. Buildings coming for you right now and buildings is going to shadow you out. You know that this road is wide/white. You know were going to drive (we drive) all night. Got to got to get there. She’s been waiting in the shitty (shady) weather. (where it’s pouring rain) (it’s pouring rain) (in the pouring rain). You said you’d be on the 6 o’clock news and I knew that this was not true. You said you’d be on the 6 o’clock news but I knew that gun wasn’t there (I know this just wasn’t true). I hid you gun I buried it deep. I hid your gun and buried it in your sleep. I know you’re angry and you want to shoot but there’s got to be some better way to find the truth. So you wait (wait check your watch again) and check (check your own watch) your watch again (again) (watch again). Why don’t (didn’t) you learn the two-step, we can go and move way out West. Wish you knew how to two-step we could go and move out West. These buildings will shadow us, these buildings will shadow us. These buildings will shadow us so let’s go where they can’t find us. Private dicks, aw, they chase us (them) down. They got a clue that you’re around. I don’t think that they’ll find the gun like I told you I buried the only one. I know that you got to go so let’s hot wire a car and let’s (not) go. I know we’re on the run and now I wish (I’d) we’d have dug up the gun. Aw come on and Aw come on and Aw come one and Aw come on and Aw come on maybe we’ll buy a gun, shoot ‘em up and go on the run. (Aw come on) I know I see your point (gun). (On the run)I see it now your sore point. Don’t waste those bullets on me.

I said a Hey wake up! You almost died in your sleep. All the while you were dreaming. The hole in your sheets. Screams do not repeat. Do not repeat smoking drunk pig in a blanket. Please please please try to remember. Please please please try to remember. Not to go down. In flames. In flames. You say you found it strange. This need to rearrange. When oh when did we start getting older. We can look back. On our younger days. Somehow my mind is not moving forward. I’ve counted eight times you should’ve died. I’ve. I’ve counted eight times you should’ve died. But you can count nine, if you count that summer again. It’s summer again. It’s summer again.

You were so brave and you were so fine. You were the one who braved it all. You made us believe that we could be tall like them. You were the one that told me to sing. You were the one that made me bring. Flowers to your bedside table. Now you’re asleep. A crack in my rib and I’m not awake. A crack in my rib and it’s a mistake. A crack in my rib that’s causing me to breathe. It’s back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again. It’s back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again. I had a dream and I thought you were in it. And you were an Eskimo and I was Inuit. We were the same. We were not from there. You kicked and you screamed and you pushed me aside. And you said get out and find your own ride. Why oh why can we not ride together. So I waited for you by the side of the road. Wishing you would drive by real slow and see the desperation I have inside. I wanted you to pick me up. Dust me off and lick me up. Nurture me like I was a little man. I’m a little man and you’re a big wave. And I can’t surf but I could be saved. But this will work in the end I know. So it’s back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again. It’s back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again. We ran away to Memphis Tennessee and we were there I think there was three. Well we needed a fourth but where were you. We put up signs all around town and we said we think our friend may have drowned. But if that’s true I hope they don’t find you. I have this image of you in my head. There’s seaweed everywhere and you’re bloated and dead. I’m not sure I want this dream anymore. Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again.

Tough news came today wish I could’ve been there to save you. But I’m away. Won’t you ring me up when you’re feeling better. Oh I will hop the next flight I’m not that far. Just try to strong. On the flight I’ll write you a love song. I wish you were strong cause I could really use your help won’t you sing along. Out the window I’m seeing lots of snow. I know it’s getting cold so we’re with you. Don’t cry. Be there soon. You know why. Love the sunshine, I remember the way it came. In through the window, light on your back’s the same. Warm, oh warm and beautiful. That was one of my favorite afternoons. Ah let’s go get lost, rent a car, drive around. Let the tears fly out of your passenger window. Let them fly out of the window. This warm breeze is unfamiliar. My my maybe we should visit hesitate. We should visit hesitate. Anyway I should go. Book my ticket and get there. I should go.

Sun trailed off and the bugs flew south. Foster tried flying but the kite broke off. Angie was popping yellows singing Grifters songs. The car was getting rusty, the city stillborn. Someone yelled “freeze” and the rain burned the snow. Against the grain runners walked with sand paper toes. Make that sandpaper singers and make it to go. Make that sandpaper fingers and make it to go. Red haired tongue took to rope and swung low. Betty brought vodka to the set up ice show. Someone’s always pining for someone’s wife. Someone’s always pining for someone’s wife. The officer said the house was all, all locked up. From the inside came screaming that we couldn’t let out. Helicopters circling overhead overheard. Helicopters circling overhead overheard. It’s never our time so let’s begin.

Well it’s over produced yet the changes are good. But who’ll sing the words “the ground’s frozen over”? If the talking had heat there’d be an ocean beneath and You’d have front row seats at a table for three. You can set your watch by the rain in this town Well it’s based on a book. click to download an excerpt. Click two more times and you’ll be going home soon. If the talking had weight, the stronger person would hear this. Then out of the nowheres stood their understanding. You can set your watch by the rain in this town Well it’s based on a sculpture. The shape’s so amorphous. But when will it crumble and who’ll sweep the dirt up. And if the talking was clean, we could heal our emotions. And if the talking had legs, who’d pull the crutch out. You can set your watch by the rain in this town

They came down from Wyoming. They came down. Isn’t that the saddest thing you ever heard? Why are their arms so long? Why are their arms so long? Is that so you can throw them around love? Amid the boundaries of this galaxy, navigation is so effortless. Recycled bicycle sparks replace the stars and the wishes of so many get let down Where’d they get that sense of humour? Where’d they get that sense of humour? There hasn’t been laughter in this town all year. Downstairs on the second shelf. Downstairs on the second shelf. You’ll see the photographs just gathering dust. Amid the boundaries of this galaxy, navigation is so effortless. Recycled bicycle sparks replace the stars and the wishes of so many get let down

Well the booze is all gone; it’s only numbness we’re feeling. As temperatures drop, as evening drapes the ceiling. And the lonely ones walk the sad, sad streets. Again. Morning breaks glass; is this be the day you’ve been regretting? Always working, sun’s face is so forgiving. After work you search the town for the one you’re dying to meet. Feet shuffle in time with all the, the drunks of the world. Oh finally it’s last call. Everyone remember your stories. Now.

Remember when we used to laugh about it and you swore that this would never end. I tried to be so good about it but I took it apart and now we’re missing another piece. And it’s just my death and it’s by vibration and it’s just my death and it’s by vibration. Remember when we used to talk about it and you would always leave the room. I tried to be so good about it I’m talking to you as you are walking out on me. And it’s just my death and it’s by vibration and it’s just my death and it’s by vibration. Whenever my mind plays tricks about it and I hear those things you’d never say. My doctors they try so hard to be good about it they’re telling me this sickness is in my mind. And it’s just my death and it’s by vibration and it’s just my death and it’s by vibration. And it’s just my death and it’s by vibration and it’s just my death and it’s by vibration.

It’s crazy out around these mountains. Looking up and they’re not really there. More like some cliffs that surround me and I don’t know what’s beyond these two things. I know it’s something.

When the paddle broke the water I may, I may have made this out of you. Afloat on the ocean I’m searching my past for a clue. And I can’t seem to find my new land, dust settles on my hand. She said she’s dreaming of tigers and swimming in Pakistan At face off this morning, discussions revolved around the truth. This coffee tastes bitter, your sugar can’t brighten my mood. The waitress is all smiles her teeth have seen more cigarettes than my hand. She said she’s smoking to honour the dead relatives that make our stars collide. And I’m on up on the runway going to go fight, of course to find you. I feel so terrible I, I didn’t know about these two. What did you expect when you’re going to put me down this darker hole. I’m going to go home, get up I’m going back to work and think about you. Walking on your foreword and my feet are forward, the feet forward and this is your excuse. I’m walking wait I‘m walking I’m walking and I’m searching all of these sights and lights. I can’t find you anywhere I look sick and I wish me away. She said she’s wandering our streets but she’s been a little unkind.

about

Never Took A Wife - the outcome of two separate sessions yet forever intertwined, for if it were not for the running away to Memphis I would have never encountered all the magical moments I found in Chicago. Never Took A Wife initially came to existence thanks in no small part to the persistence of Jon Bartlett and the tenacity of Kelp Records. recorded in memphis at Easley/McCain with Stuart Sikes and recorded in chicago at 4 Deuces/Clava/Thegarage with Jim McGranahan. I will be forever grateful to have these moments i had.
